The Soul Sounds Academy Children’s Choir was established under the leadership of Soundarie David Rodrigo, with the mission to develop young vocal talent and nurture the next generation of choral performers in Sri Lanka. Catering to children aged 5-14, the choir has grown into a dynamic group known for its versatility and passion for music. The Soul Sounds Academy Children’s Choir is a performing choir where selection into the choir is based on an audition process conducted every year, open to exclusively Soul Sounds Academy Students.
The choir trains its members in vocal technique, musicianship, and performance, allowing them to explore a wide range of musical genres, from classical to contemporary. Over the years, the choir has performed at numerous prestigious local and international events, showcasing the discipline, creativity, and vocal prowess of its young members.
2024 has been an exceptional year for the choir, with their participation at the Bali International Choral Festival standing out as a major achievement. Competing against choirs from across the world, the children delivered stellar performances, earning accolades and international recognition . Their success in Bali further solidified the Soul Sounds Academy Children’s Choir as one of the leading children’s choirs in the region, with a reputation for musical excellence and high-level performances.
In addition to Bali, the choir has had a busy year, participating in various local concerts and festivals, continuing to grow and inspire both audiences and aspiring young musicians. The Soul Sounds Academy Children’s Choir remains committed to fostering a love for the arts, emphasizing teamwork, discipline, and passion, while helping its members grow into confident
performers ready to take on the world stage. The Soul Sounds Academy Children’s Choir is conducted by Vocal Coach and Member of Faculty – Shenuk Wijesinghe, under the overall Artistic Direction of Soundarie David Rodrigo.
The Soul Sounds Academy Teenage Choir, consisting of talented singers aged 13 to 16, is a vibrant and dynamic ensemble known for its exceptional performances and dedication to musical excellence. Under the direction of Soundarie David Rodrigo, the choir has gained recognition for its outstanding choral arrangements and vocal prowess. The Soul Sounds Academy Teenage Choir was established keeping in mind the growing interest on the changing voice for teenagers around the world, and the need for our young teenagers, coming out of the Children’s choir to not just work on their voice, but also to attempt repertoire that is suitable for their voices and to gain further experience performing.
In 2024, the choir achieved notable success at the Bali International Choral Festival, where they won a prestigious gold medal in the Teenage Choir category. This achievement highlights their exceptional talent and dedication to choral music.
The choir’s repertoire includes a diverse range of genres, from classical to contemporary, showcasing their versatility and commitment to musical artistry. With a strong emphasis on both technical skill and emotional expression, the Soul Sounds Academy Teenage Choir continues to inspire and engage audiences with their performances. The choir is conducted by Vocal Coach and Member of Faculty, Shivanthi Subramaniam, under the overall Artistic Direction of Soundarie David Rodrigo.
The Soul Sounds Academy Intermediate Choir is a distinguished ensemble among the choirs under the Soul Sounds Academy umbrella. This exceptional choir is helmed by Soundarie David Rodrigo, who continuing the success of Soul Sounds, Sri Lanka’s premiere female ensemble, was keen on starting a mixed choir to attempt more repertoire as well as continue the joy of choral singing among both ladies and men.
The choir has a wealth of experience representing Sri Lanka at International Choir festivals and competitions and has amassed numerous accolades for its outstanding performances. Notably, they have achieved success in prestigious competitions such as the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod in Wales (2010), the Asia Pacific Choir Games in Indonesia and Sri Lanka (2013 and 2017), and the World Virtual Choir Festival (2020), earning several gold medals. Additionally, the choir has performed across the country for various events and initiatives, receiving widespread praise and recognition.
This year, the choir was also invited by BBC London to participate in a performance of the Commonwealth countries for the Coronation Gala Concert. In their latest endeavour, the choir achieved even greater success, winning two gold medals in the
Bali International Choir Festival in both the Mixed Choir Category and the Pop and Jazz Category.
The Soul Sounds Academy Mixed Choir is conducted by Shivanthi Subramaniam, under the overall Artistic Direction of Soundarie David Rodrigo.
